Hi,

It has been a busy month for members of our team – out and about visiting venues in Sydney, Queensland, Victoria and Japan. These visits to venues are an integral part of our service to you ensuring our knowledge and experience of venues is up to date.

There has been a lot of interest for overseas venues this year with Asia being popular - especially Vietnam, Thailand, Macau and Japan. Sydney has also been in high demand of late and Rachel Buck is up to speed on all the Sydney options after attending the Australian Events Expo 2008 in Sydney last month.

We are hearing much discussion about the measurement and assessment of "Green / carbon footprint / environmentally friendly" hotels and conference venues as we look to place business with those who are "Green or Eco friendly". It would appear that we have a mix of methods in use for assessing and / or measuring the Eco issue. The adoption of a simple easy to understand national system would be ideal.

I have left the footy to last (go Hawks). I can report that I have slipped well down the list in our tipping competition; it might be best for me to stick with the sailing. Enjoy your winter, with hopefully for the skiers, lots of snow at your favourite mountain.

Regards,

Jim Conway

New Environmental Award – Be rewarded for thinking Green!

The MEA Meetings & Events Industry Awards recognise excellent business practice in the Meetings & Events Industry. This year, an optional environmental question has been added to all award submissions. The submission is judged by an environmental industry expert and the highest scores will be presented with an environmental contribution award. The question asks applicants to describe their contributions to the environment and efforts in reducing environmental impact. There were six businesses recognised for their efforts in the 07/08 MEA awards.

Green initiatives at Marriott

It also won the Environmental Management Award at the Gold Coast Business Excellence Awards.

Hotel room rates on the rise

It is anticipated that hotel room rates in Sydney and Melbourne could rise between 10-15% over the next three years as we currently experience rates that have historically not kept up with inflation. Average room rates in Moscow are $US323, Paris $US320 and Dubai $US283 according to Deloitte Hospitality compared with Sydney at $US189 and Melbourne $US172.
